■ Autonomous buses are to be tested for two weeks in Edinburgh.
Five single-storey buses run by Stagecoach and in partnership with tech company Fusion Processing will operate at SAE Level 4 over the Forth Road Bridge between Ferrytoll Park & Ride in Fife and Edinburgh Train and Tram interchange.
Level 4 autonomy is where a vehicle can drive itself without the need for human intervention, but only on dedicated routes.
If the tests are successful a pilot service will start later in the summer in which each bus will have an experienced driver on hand to monitor the autonomous systems – and presumably take over if things go wrong. It’ll be interesting to see how well the trials go.
