Police begin probe after fatal crash

AN investigat­ion has been launched after a man died following a collision in Gateshead.

The 23-year-old man was found trapped inside a white Renault Megane on a bridge at the Lobley Hill roundabout above the A1 shortly after 4am on Saturday.

The driver was freed from the car and taken to hospital but has since died.

An investigat­ion has been launched and police are appealing for witnesses, especially anyone who might have dashcam footage, to come forward.

PC Marc Lennox, from Northumbri­a Police’s Motor Patrols department, said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident and our thoughts go out to the man’s family and friends at this time.”
