Mad inversion of the truth

-

I HAVE never been more ashamed of my country. The Defence Secretary’s attack on Russia on the day they celebrated the defeat of Nazi Germany, for which over 25 million Russians gave their lives, was as historically ignorant as it was ideologically absurd.

To accuse the Russians of “Nazism” when it is precisely those whom NATO and the EU are arming in Ukraine who are openly militant and ideological Nazis is the kind of mad inversion of truth which leads to world wars.

How different were the words of Winston Churchill in 1945 when he paid tribute to Russia “our great partner in our victory over the terrible foe” and expressed our nation’s “deep sense of gratitude we owe to the noble Russian people and valiant Soviet Armies who poured out their blood and suffered immeasurable torments until absolute victory was gained”.

To ignore these truths, Churchill asserted, would be “to derange the balance which must always be preserved if the harmony and poise of world affairs is to be maintained”.

Our Government has forgotten history, distorted the present and “deranged that balance” which preserves world peace.
