A wider problem

WHILE thousands of people in our region continue to struggle with the cost-of-living crisis, we are reminded that not only individual­s are affected by the effects of rising costs. Figures released yesterday show that unemployme­nt has fallen significan­tly in the North East, with the number of people claiming out-of-work benefits now below pre-pandemic levels.

The number of people on benefits has dropped to below 75,000 for the first time in two years. And, despite the fact that the jobless rate in our region remains well above the national average, this gives us cause for optimism.

However, business leaders are concerned about the impact of rising costs on the region’s employers – and their ability to fill jobs, with early retirement on the rise and skills shortages in several sectors.

The Government has promised to provide help in this crisis. The question which needs answering urgently is when.
