Road closed due to large sinkhole

POLICE closed a road in Durham after a sinkhole appeared.

The B6310 at Longclose Bank at Medomsley Bank in Consett was closed due to the appearance of a large sinkhole on the A694 on Tuesday afternoon.

The road will remain shut until an investigation can take place by Durham County Council.

Police officers at the scene of the sinkhole, which is around 4ft wide, asked drivers to avoid the A694 from Rowlands Gill to Shotley Bridge.

The force did not reveal when Durham County Council are expected to carry out an inspection, or when the road was likely to reopen.
