Heed boss favourite for League Two job roles

- JEFF BOWRON

GATESHEAD player-manager Mike Williamson is one of the Bookies favourites for two League Two clubs.

Williamson has been installed as one of the top three frontrunners for the vacant manager post at both Barrow and Hartlepool.

The 38-year-old is as little as 3/1 on some betting sites and has already held talks with Hartlepool.

Barrow recently parted company with Phil Brown and have struggled since their return to the Football League after a 48-year absence.

Gateshead chairman Neil Pinkerton remains confident that Williamson will remain at the Heed helm.

“Barrow have not been in touch,” said Pinkerton, “and if he isn’t interested in going to Hartlepool, I’d be surprised if he were to go to Barrow. Mike is committed to the project we have at Gateshead and is planning for our return to the National League.”

Williamson’s stock is high after the former Newcastle defender took Gateshead to their first title in 36 years in some style.

The Tynesiders are now just one division below Barrow and Hartlepool in the football pyramid. Williamson has also this week been named Manager of the Year in Vanarama National League North.

All parties, meanwhile, are keeping their cards close to their chest, Williamson focusing on Gateshead matters.

“The team has been phenomenal, and it has been a collective effort,” said Williamson.

“I think we were underdogs this season and we will be underdogs again next season.

“I don’t think anything will change in that respect, but we’ve still got that honest group of lads with a work ethic and belief in themselves. That will continue into next season regardless of where we fare, budget or size of club. We know what our strengths and core values are – and that won’t change.”

Gateshead are holding a fans event at the International Stadium tomorrow between 12-4pm tomorrow where champions merchandise will be available and supporters can also get their picture taken with the National League North Trophy.
