Pizza war breaks out
THE quest to find Newcastle’s perfect pizza is approaching as Wylam Brewery prepares for the return of their popular Slice Wars competition.
At least 12 local food vendors will be pitching at Exhibition Park later this month to battle it out for the title of Newcastle’s best pizza.
Scream for Pizza, Log Pizza Co and Fire & Dough are just some of the vendors returning for this year’s competition.
Newcomers Square and Wild Fire Pizza will also be hoping to win over the public with their mouthwatering creations. There will also be an abundance of sides, including loaded fries, sweet treats, and coffees, as well as plenty of choice for vegans and vegetarians.
It’s expected that vendors will serve up between 15,000 and 20,000 pizza slices over the course of the contest, which will take place between May 27 and 28.
Food will be served from 3pm on the Friday and from midday on the Saturday, with music, beers and cocktails until late.
Slice Wars is a family-friendly and dog-friendly event. And on top of all that, the battle will be happening at a Star Wars-themed event which has, and always will be, free entry.
Once at the event, people wishing to sample the delights on offer can purchase tokens for food items from inside Wylam Brewery. Tokens will cost £4 each.
The annual event follows the brewery’s popular Battle of the Burger competition, which returned last month with its biggest competition yet.
Over 20,000 burgers were served up at this year’s Battle of the Burger competition, with Lola Jeans being crowned winners for a sixth time.
North East favourites such as Parm-O-Rama, Jam Jar and Scream for Pizza served up a selection of burgers hoping to beat Lola Jeans to the top spot.
But the champs who won visitors’ votes with their creation, Tickle the Pickle – a beef burger served with smoked streaky bacon, American cheese, red onion jam, pickles, ranch and topped with pickled onion Monster Munch crisps.
