Langley joinsTynesiders for taste of senior action

- JEFF BOWRON

GATESHEAD have brought in giant Newcastle United goalkeeper Dan Langley and are homing in on their top striker target Aaron Martin.

Langley played half of Saturday’s 2-0 training-ground defeat against a Sunderland XI at the Academy of Light, keeping a clean sheet.

The 21-year-old 6ft 7in shot-stopper has joined Gateshead on a season-long loan to gain his first regular experience of senior football.

Martin, meanwhile, is expected to leave League Two outfit Harrogate Town this week, with Tyneside his expected destination.

If the Heed get the deal over the line, he would become the third new striker to join Gateshead over the summer.

Martin, 31 tomorrow, has attracted interest from other National League clubs - including FC Halifax Town.

Gateshead have already brought in six new players and there will be at least two more coming into the club.

Wrexham midfielder Dan Jarvis joined Gateshead on Friday and was given a run-out at Sunderland the next day.

Langley, who will vie for the number one jersey at Gateshead with experienced player-coach James Montgomery, is ready for the challenge of senior football.

He said: “It’s been a while in the offing so I’m really happy to get it all signed and done.

“I’m raring to get going this year and want to come in and basically build it in the way they play and help them progress through that.

“I’m comfortable with the ball at my feet.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to fit right in as I know some of the lads as I have played with them in the past.

“Seeing them do well at Gateshead just puts it into my mind that I can do well and progress here as well.”

Gateshead will get to know their first-day and festive opponents when the 2022/23 National League fixtures are released on Wednesday.
