Race is back in the pink

-

OVER 1,700 runners gathered together in a fight against cancer to raise an incredible amount of money as the Race for Life came to the North East.

Fundraisers of all ages took part in a series of fun runs at Sunderland’s Herrington Park on Sunday, with runners taking part in 10k, 5k and 3k challenges – as well as a Pretty Muddy obstacle course and Pretty Muddy Kids event, raising an estimated £191,000 for Cancer Research UK.

One of the many fundraisers there on the day was David Ansell who completed the 10k course and added additional mileage to make up the distance to 10 miles.

David, a serving soldier from Sunderland, is five months into a mammoth undertaking to walk 10 miles a day for 1,000 consecutive days to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

David, who has been inspired by the death of his father, also David, from cancer and the experience of friends, said: “It was great to be back at Race for Life with my partner and friends. It’s a fantastic event, with a brilliant atmosphere and reminds me of why I’m doing this challenge – to raise money for vital research to help us beat cancer sooner.”

Money raised at Race for Life enables scientists to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer – helping to save more lives.

This is the 30th year of Race for Life and participants received an exclusive medal to mark the milestone.

Every year around 19,500 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North East and one in two people in the UK born after 1960 will get cancer in their lifetime.
