Barrie takes over from Serfontein at Hanro

-

A new managing director has been appointed at North property development and investment firm Hanro Group.

Duncan Barrie, finance director for the last seven years, takes over the top job from Adam Serfontein who, after exactly 25 years with the group, will step back from day to day operations but remain as a director to advise on strategy.

Mr Serfontein, who led Developing Consensus for 10 years and is also non executive chairman of Newcastle’s business district improvement company NE1 Ltd, said: “Property and finance expertise should always be working hand in hand and in the current economic climate and the post Covid environment, this is absolutely critical.

“Duncan’s appointment merges the two sectors perfectly and whilst I’ll be stepping away from my role as managing director, I am looking forward to supporting Duncan and contributing to the future success of the business.”

Mr Barrie said: “There are a lot of current external challenges, led by high interest rates and the uncertain economic outlook. Key for us going forward will be in ensuring continuity and maintaining our close relationships with tenants. Adam clearly leaves huge boots to fill, but I am confident with his continued involvement and the wider Hanro team we will successfully navigate the challenge.

“I spent well over half my career as a tenant and sitting on the other side as a landlord has been an interesting switch. This experience I believe is key in understanding the dynamics and needs of our tenants.

“On a personal level I am delighted, and humbled, to be taking over from Adam. Most MD’s will tell you it can be a lonely place, less so when you are surrounded by great people.”
