Bumper entry for The Zetland

- PETER BURGON

THE Zetland’s traditional May Bank Holiday Monday fixture at Witton Castle is usually one of the best supported on the Yorkshire circuit and this year’s renewal should be no exception. It has attracted a bumper total of 98 entries for a six race card which starts at 2.00.

Malton trainer Jack Teal is the one to follow having saddled the last three Maiden Race winners at Corbridge and Overton, including debutant Kalypso’chance who subsequently changed hands for £85,000 at Tattersalls Cheltenham Sale. The concluding Maiden contest here has 29 entries and Teal is hoping it will be divided on the day as he has four live chances in Wotnowcato, Boots Folly, Kdeux Saint Fray and unraced youngster Cabin Crew.

The pick of the quartet is Wotnowcato who was almost upsides the useful Grangeclare Diego at Brocklesby Park when falling at the last, Boots Folly held every chance when coming to grief four out at Friars Haugh last time, while Kdeux Saint Fray caught the eye when only beaten a length on debut in a 2m Garthorpe Flat Race a fortnight ago. Courting Flow is Teal’s representative in the Conditions Race and will take all the beating. Still on the upgrade, he split two smart horses in Jeux D’Eau and Red Delta at Thorpe Lodge on Easter Monday and that form was franked when the winner followed up in the prestigious Lady Dudley Cup at Chaddesley Corbett.

Lou Marvelous was a very cosy Maiden winner at Charm Park in early March before finding only Court Cian half-a-length too good when stepped up in grade at Garthorpe. William Easterby’s mount might well have won that day had he not made a mistake at the last and compensation awaits in the Restricted Race.

Former Rose Dobbin-trained chaser Slanelough didn’t see another rival at Hornby Castle on his first start for Northallerton farmer Philip Greaves and a repeat performance is on the cards in the Men’s Open Race with a sound surface and sharp track right up his street, while stable companions Fresh New Dawn and course specialist Royal Chant should be in the mix in the Ladies Open Race in which likely favourite Mount Mews looks vulnerable.
