British academy television awards 2018
Before the small matter of a certain royal wedding later in the week, first comes a more than adequate hors d’oeuvre of glamour in the shape of an ocean of stars turning up at London’s Royal Festival Hall for British television’s premier awards.
There’s an almighty clash of the titans in some categories, particularly Leading Actress in which the brilliant performance by Thandie Newton (above) in Line Of Duty is vying for honours with that of Claire Foy as Her Majesty in The Crown. It’s difficult to see past a posthumous award for Leading Actor for the late, lamented Tim Pigott-Smith in King Charles III; meanwhile, look out for Rob Brydon, Anna Friel and Adrian Dunbar among other viewers’ favourites.
But there’s one man certain to be clutching a trophy: John Motson, given a Bafta Special Award after more than half a century as one of the greatest sports broadcasters Britain’s ever seen.
