You Tell Me, the new project from Sarah Hayes of in­die folkies Ad­mi­ral Fal­low and Peter Brewis of DIY pop masters Field Mu­sic, matches Hayes’ bell-clear voice with Brewis’s rest­less cham­ber-pop in­ven­tion. That re­sults in arty, sur­pris­ing folk mu­sic (Clar­ion Call, Jouska) and also Field Mu­sic-style art-pop with an ap­peal­ing di­rect­ness (Enough To No­tice, No Hurry). Ei­ther way, it’s a good thing.

For those who miss the un­hur­ried, tan­gled gui­tars of the Grate­ful Dead or the jazzy, folky po­etry of Fred Neil, there are plenty of Amer­i­can singer-song­writ­ers will­ing and able to sum­mon them up. Steve Gunn has sat in the sweet spot of such ru­ral, spacey vibes for a decade, and this re­states that, whether stretch­ing shim­mer­ing licks into ex­tended jams (Chance, New Fa­mil­iar) or spin­ning webs of acous­tic pret­ti­ness (Morn­ing Is Mended).
