The grey squirrel climbs into list of world’s top pests
THE grey squirrel has been named on a list of the world’s 100 most ‘invasive’ animals that are damaging native wildlife after being introduced from overseas.
In Britain, the squirrel, brought from the US in the 19th Century, out-competes its British red cousin for food and habitat and carries the squirrelpox virus, which is fatal to the native species.
Other animals living in the UK that made the Top 100 list include the American mink and muntjac deer, both of which prey on native species, damage crops and harm the environment.
The list was drawn up by Oxford University wildlife experts for the People’s Trust for Endangered Species.
