In a frank and wide-ranging interview, the former Leicester, England and Lions captain also hit back at former Test colleagues who have criticised him and his England team recently.

‘It’s easy to talk about “When we were playing” and it’s easy to see yourself as faultless,’ he said. ‘The criticism from former players grates but it also makes me smile. You remember the things they did and the mistakes they made.’
