HARRY’S £134M JACKPOT

Last-gasp Zamora bails out QPR

- By Stephen Davies

BOBBY ZAMORA struck a dramatic last-minute winner as QPR beat Derby 1-0 at Wembley to seal an instant return to the Premier League and save Rangers from even more financial heartache.

On as a substitute in what will probably be his last match for Rangers, Zamora waved goodbye with a precise left-foot strike to settle a gripping Championship play-off final that could be worth an estimated £134million to the winners. And for a club with debts of £177m and facing more eye-watering fines for incurring such colossal losses, the 33-yearold’s strike was virtually priceless.

QPR had been outplayed by Derby and were hanging on for the last half-hour with 10 men after Gary O’Neil’s red card, leaving manager Harry Redknapp stunned. ‘I don’t know how we did it,’ he admitted. ‘We were looking to get to extra-time. That was the only hope I could see. I wanted to keep it tight and get to penalties, I’d be lying if I said otherwise.’

For Zamora it was the second time he had been a play-off hero having also scored the winner for West Ham in 2005. ‘It’s the most incredible feeling,’ he said. ‘To have done this twice is unbelievable, especially when you consider how good Derby had been.’

The result will help QPR’s financial position, with a fine for breaching Football League Financial Fair Play regulations — which could be as much as £50m — hanging over the club.

Owner Tony Fernandes, however, was happy to simply celebrate. ‘If I’m knocked down by a bus tomorrow I’ll have died a happy man,’ he said.

Devastated Derby boss Steve McClaren said: ‘I’ve lost games in my career, but that’s the cruellest.’
