Gavin’s going for a big Share of radio audience

- By VICKI OWEN

CITY veteran Gavin Oldham, the founder of online stockbroker The Share Centre, says his new money-focused radio station Share Radio is aiming for 100,000 listeners within its first year.

The station, which launched on November 4, is broadcast from studios in Pimlico, central London, seven days a week online via shareradio.co.uk and its smartphone app as well as on digital radio in Greater London.

It has a staff of more than 20 producing regular money shows from Morning Money’s look at the UK and global markets to Consuming Issues, a consumer finance show.

Increased mobile use means more listening hours for digital radio and Oldham predicts increased advertising spend. He said: ‘We are a commercial station and are looking to earn our way. We will do that through sponsorships.’ He said radio is better suited to money shows than TV because ‘money is not a very visual thing. It doesn’t, like sport, lend itself to television’.

Oldham, 65, who is also a member of the General Synod and a former Church Commissioner, told The Mail on Sunday: ‘There are five key values at the station – respect for others, empowerment, clarity, enterprise and trust.

‘Respect for others is all about walking alongside people, not talking down to them, because the City is really bad at being patronising.’

The Choir of York Minster opens live broadcasting each day and every Sunday the Faith and Finance programme invites a religious expert in finance to help give a multifaith perspective on money.

THE first Online Radio Conference will be held at the Ace Hotel, Shoreditch, East London on January 29. Nikhil Shah, co-founder of Mixcloud, is a speaker. Mixcloud allows its 10million users to upload radio shows, podcasts, or music to be shared.

Money shows on Mixcloud include BBC 5Live’s Wake Up To Money.
