FORGET statement necklaces, cocktail rings and clutch bags – there’s a new accessory dominating the red carpet.

In recent months, A-listers from Jennifer Lawrence to Emma Watson have been playing it by ear by sporting eye-catching, jewel-encrusted ear cuffs.

Previously the preserve of punks, the cuffs may have been given a high-fashion makeover, but they’re still being used to add a certain edge to celebrity style.

Worn on only one ear, and with the wearer’s hair tied up or swept to one side, these are accessories designed to make a statement. They snake upwards from the lobe, or down from the top of the ear, creating the illusion of several piercings.

In reality, only one piercing is required – or, in the case of Cara Delevingne’s dia- mond Chanel version, none at all. They first appeared on the fashion radar when designers Rodarte created versions inspired by the Game Of Thrones character Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons. But at this year’s big red-carpet events, the trend became ubiquitous. Italian brand Repossi has become the stars’ favourite for punky but pretty diamondstudded designs, with New York jeweller Lorraine Schwartz a close second.

And with the high street jumping on the bandwagon and producing affordable copycat versions, now’s the time to ditch the studs and join the cuff clan…
