Jim Carrey’s heartbroken farewell to his Irish flower

- By Valerie Hanley

HOLLYWOOD star Jim Carrey wept at his former girlfriend Cathriona White’s graveside yesterday after helping to carry her coffin.

The actor was surrounded by the family and friends of the 30-year-old make-up artist – who took her own life in Los Angeles two weeks ago.

Carrey’s face was etched with grief as he looked at the simple grave where Ms White was laid to rest in her hometown of Cappawhite, amid the lush, green fields of County Tipperary, Ireland.

Earlier, the Hollywood actor had helped five male relatives carry his ex-girlfriend’s coffin after the funeral mass at the country church – Our Lady of Fatima – where Cath- riona had been baptised a Catholic in 1985. As they walked to the graveyard, Cappawhite came to a standstill as locals paid their final respects to the small-town girl who had bigtown dreams.

After carrying the coffin for ten minutes, Carrey stepped aside to let another relative take his place and continued a silent walk with his arms wrapped around Cathriona’s family members.

But at the cemetery gates, Carrey, 53, stepped forward to once again help carry Cathriona – for the last few yards of her final journey.

And when her coffin was lowered into the grave, Carrey at last allowed himself to cry, shaking his head in grief as the tears flowed.

Cathriona was buried alongside her father Pat, whose death from cancer three years ago, friends claim, she never recovered from.

Carrey, who was joined by his daughter Jane, lingered at the graveside with Cathriona’s family and friends, before travelling together to a reception at the local community centre.

After news of Cathriona’s death first broke, Carrey issued a statement, saying: ‘She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil.’
