3 ways to... BEAT IBS

-

PREVENT One in five Britons suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a long-term complaint of the digestive system characterised by bloating, stomach pain, diarrhoea and/or constipation. Symptoms can flare up during periods of stress or after eating certain foods. Avoiding a hectic lifestyle where possible, and sitting down for regular meals rather than eating on the go may prevent symptoms from developing. Identifying trigger foods and drinks, avoiding alcohol, and taking regular exercise can also help.

TREAT It is important to see your GP to ascertain what is causing your symptoms. They may want to carry out a blood test to rule out other conditions such as coeliac disease, Crohn’s, or ulcerative colitis. Depending on how your IBS manifests itself, they will offer advice on how much and what type of fibre to consume. For example, if diarrhoea is a problem you may need to cut down on wholegrain bread and cereals. If you struggle with bloating, the Low FODMAP diet may help – this involves cutting down on milk, wheat and some fruit and veg.

DON’T BOTHER Manufacturers claim that probiotics, taken in drink, pill or powder form, will boost good bacteria in the gut and restore a healthy balance. There is little evidence to back this up – bar one drink, Symprove. Researchers gave the formula to IBS patients and found that it improved their symptoms after 12 weeks.
