RFU delay leaves Lancaster in limbo

- By Sam Peters

STUART LANCASTER’S hopes of a swift decision over his future as England head coach have been thwarted as RFU bosses stall over the make-up of the review panel which will decide his fate.

More than two weeks after England became the first host nation not to qualify for the knock-out stages of the World Cup, when they were thrashed at Twickenham by Australia, the RFU has still not finalised who will conduct the review.

Lancaster, whose position is under immense pressure along with the rest of his three-man coaching team, had called for a ‘speedy’ resolution but that call has fallen on deaf ears.

RFU chief executive Ian Ritchie is certain to form part of the panel, with professional rugby director Rob Andrew also expected to be involved. There have been calls for former players Lawrence Dallaglio and Richard Hill also to be involved, while Premier Rugby bosses last week demanded to be part of the process of deciding England’s coaching team.

RFU insiders say an announcement can be expected this week over the make-up of the panel but, with the World Cup ongoing, it appears unlikely any work will begin until after the tournament.

One of Ritchie’s biggest concerns, and part of the reason for the delay, is over possible leaks. The last review in 2011, which saw the RFU, Premier Rugby and Rugby Players Association all carry out separate investigations into England’s shambolic showing in New Zealand, was leaked, leaving players, coaches and administrators feeling badly let down by the process.

Lancaster said after the defeat to Australia: ‘I’m happy to talk about anything in an open and honest way.

‘It would be good if the review was allowed to be done properly, privately, professionally and speedily, then whatever happens happens.’
