Mel C: I was so depressed as a Spice Girl that not even £2m can tempt me back

- By Jaber Mohamed

FORMER Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm has told how she was offered a remarkable £2million to rejoin the group – but turned it down because being in the band made her so depressed.

In a revealing interview with today’s Event magazine, Mel – alias Sporty Spice – says her time in the global spotlight as one of the purveyors of ‘Girl Power’ brought on eating disorders and misery.

Mel, 42, says: ‘When the Spice Girls were at their biggest, I couldn’t even really look at myself in the mirror because I didn’t like what I saw. Depression, eating disorders, obsessive over-exercising; I went through all of it.’

The Mail on Sunday revealed last week that Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton and Mel B have reformed the group, but without Victoria Beckham or Mel C. The remaining trio hope to launch a TV talent show to fill the vacancies before a Hyde Park concert next year.

Mel, who is thought to have made £22million from her time in the band, says: ‘I made a lot in the Spice Girls but I spent a hell of a lot and had fun spending it.’

She says of not rejoining the group: ‘I’d like to say the money didn’t matter to me. I’m a single mother and I do have financial concerns.’

‘It was a really difficult decision. I didn’t take it lightly. I did go quite far down the route with the girls. I went to a lot of meetings but I just didn’t feel it was right in my gut. When I finally said no I just felt relief.’
