Sergio: I need to score more
SERGIO AGUERO scored his 150th goal in just his 223rd appearance for Manchester City yesterday — but the perfectionist insisted he needed to improve on his finishing.
Aguero, 28, fired City into the lead approaching half-time against Middlesbrough but then missed several chances to wrap the game up and was stunned when Boro levelled in injury-time after he had been replaced by Kelechi Iheanacho.
‘I had many chances today, the clearest was the one where Jesus Navas pulled the ball back to me,’ he said.
‘It was under my feet and I only had a few seconds to decide. I need to improve on that. ’
Aguero is sixth in City’s list of all-time goalscorers and the current record of 177 held by pre-war forward Eric Brook is within sight.
City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan believes the ‘goal machine’ will remain at the club to break that record despite interest from Real Madrid.
‘I have no doubt he will stay,’ said the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder. ‘I have been lucky to play with great strikers — Robert Lewandowski and now Aguero.
‘Lewandowski, of course, is taller but both are very strong and are able to keep the ball. And Sergio, he’s just a goal machine. I mean if he has the chances to score then 90 to 95 per cent of the time he will score.’
Aguero’s contract runs until 2019 and it has been reported that he has agreed a 12-month extension, though there has been no confirmation from City.
