CLIMB ABOARD THE POLAR EXPRESS IN DEVON

MAKE Christmas magical for the little ones on board the Polar Express, an enchanting interactiv­e experience based on the bestsellin­g book and hugely popular Christmas film. Trains depart from Dartmoor Railway’s Okehampton station towards the ‘North Pole’ on various dates in late November and throughout December. Sing along to songs from the film, enjoy hot chocolate and cookies served by dancing waiters, and meet Santa himself.

ENJOY FESTIVE TREATS BY THE SEA IN CORNWALL

SEE the Cornish town of Padstow in all its festive finery as the Padstow Christmas Festival unfolds from December 1 to 4. Along with an array of seasonal treats, including a Santa run and a sparkling fireworks display over the harbour, there’ll also be plenty of culinary events. See famous chefs give live demonstrat­ions, and feast on local specialiti­es at the quayside Christmas Market. But be sure to save room for a meal at the Harbour Restaurant, which has just been awarded a second AA Rosette. Perched high above the town, savour the views of the River Camel while tucking into exquisite Cornish seafood.

INDULGE IN SHOPPING AND SPAS IN HARROGATE

HEAD to the elegant Montpellie­r Quarter with an empty stomach during the Harrogate Christmas Market from November 17 to 20. This festive spectacula­r has more than 200 market stalls stacked high with top-quality local produce and hand-made gifts. Then unwind at the 19th Century Turkish Baths with an aromatic massage in exotic surroundin­gs.

HEAD BACK TO VICTORIAN ENGLAND IN GLOUCESTER

GLOUCESTER is famous for its Victorian Christmas Market held at Gloucester Quays from November 17 to 20. Jump on a vintage carousel, enjoy traditiona­l games and browse more than 250 stalls selling artisan crafts, fine foods and unique Christmas gifts, while costumed characters add to the enchanting Dickensian setting.

BROWSE CHRISTMAS GIFTS IN BIRMINGHAM

DISCOVER Bavarian delights in the heart of Birmingham as you explore one of the largest German markets outside Germany and Austria. Running from November 17 to December 29, there are more than 140 stalls in Victoria Square selling jewellery, decoration­s, hand-made toys and delicious fare. Then head over to the Bull Ring to browse designs by Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen in Selfridges. If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, the hundreds of high street brands surroundin­g the iconic store will keep you busy for days.
