SPICE UP YOUR LIFE WITH TURMERIC
NO longer an unsung hero of the spice rack, turmeric has been shown by studies to help reduce inflammation, treat digestive problems and could even help protect against cancer. The super-spice has some high-profile fans, from FC Barcelona footballers who have been taking a turmeric formulation for damaged joints to Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley, who has shared a video of herself sporting a DIY turmeric face mask to soothe her skin. The key ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, a chemical compound that gives the spice its vivid colour, and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. Curcumin is also a powerful antioxidant, helping to fight free radicals, the molecules which can damage our cells.
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY
Studies show turmeric interrupts chemical pathways and signalling mechanisms involved in joint inflammation and arthritis. An Italian study of 50 patients found those who took turmeric alongside standard care had a 58 per cent decrease in pain and stiffness after 90 days, compared to those receiving standard treatment.
INDIGESTION
Curcumin stimulates the gallbladder to produce bile, which some people think may help improve digestion. One double-blind placebo-controlled study found that turmeric reduced symptoms of bloating and gas in people suffering from indigestion.
PROTECTION FROM CANCER?
Research has shown that there are low rates of certain types of cancer in countries where people eat curcumin at levels of about 100-200mg a day over long periods of time. Laboratory tests suggest it is possible that curcumin could play a role, but this hasn’t been studied in humans.
