May leads the Tories to record 21-point poll lead over Labour

- By Brendan Carlin POLITICAL REPORTER

THERESA MAY was celebrating Easter today with her party’s biggest poll lead yet over Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour.

The Tories now stand 21 points ahead of Labour – the largest gap since Mrs May became Prime Minister.

The huge lead emerged as Mrs May drew on her childhood as the daughter of a Church of England vicar to issue an Easter message appealing to the country to ‘come together’ in the wake of the Brexit vote. She said: ‘This Easter, I think of those values that we share – values that I learnt in my childhood, growing up in a vicarage.

‘Values of compassion, community, citizenship. The sense of obligation we have to one another.’

She continued: ‘After a period of intense debate over the right future for our country, there is a sense that people are coming together and uniting behind the opportunities that lie ahead.

‘For at heart, this country is one great union of people and nations with a proud history and a bright future.

‘And as we face the opportunities ahead of us – the opportunities that stem from our decision to leave the European Union and embrace the world – our shared interests, our shared ambitions and above all our shared values can – and must – bring us together.’

In his message, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – who has denied he is an atheist but insists his religious views are ‘private’ – sent Easter greetings to ‘all Christians and those of all faiths and none’.

According to the new ComRes poll, the Tories are now on 46 points – up four on last month – with Labour trailing on 25 and the Liberal Democrats at 11.
