DESIGNER Pearl Lowe, the mother of model and Strictly Come Dancing star Daisy, has been accused of ‘ sexualising’ children with a controversial modelling shoot involving her other daughter, aged 11.
Daisy’s half-sister, Betty Goffey, is pictured wearing ‘dressing-up outfits’ including a bunny costume and a glittery bikini on her mother’s website. One shocked children’s-rights campaigner condemned the images, including Betty wearing heavy eye make-up and red lipstick, as ‘grossly irresponsible’.
The pictures are being used to promote a new fashion line called Pearl Lowe Petite, which is being sold in Harrods and Selfridges as well as online.
Pearl, 47, says the collection is her ‘ first ever luxury kids lifestyle brand’. The £320 ‘bunny outfit’, pictured above, includes pink satin ears and a fluffy pink tail very similar to the accessories worn by women in Playboy clubs in the 1970s. Betty also appears in a £100 gold sequin bikini she models in make-up including garish eye shadow.
The pictures used here by The Mail on Sunday have been cropped but are far more revealing on the website. Norman Wells, director of the campaign group Family Education Trust, said some of the designs and poses amounted ‘to nothing less than the sexualisation of children’ and it was ‘grossly irresponsible to encourage children to dress and behave in a manner akin to glamour models’.
Pearl has been criticised in the past for allowing Betty, whose father is Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey, to model for designer Marc Jacobs when she was just nine.
Dame Esther Rantzen, president of Childline, said: ‘ The fashion industry has a lot to answer for and of course we don’t want young people to become sex objects.’ There is no suggestion that Betty’s own welfare has been put at risk.
The Mail on Sunday was not able to contact Pearl Lowe for comment.
