Cap police chiefs’ salaries at £100,000
Further to your report about a Chief Constable who retired from his £195,000-a-year job only to be immediately rehired on a £1,000-a-day contract, it is high time that the Home Office put an end to obscene payments to chief police officers regardless of whether they are serving or retired.
I can see no reason why a ceiling cannot be put on salaries at £100,000 a year. The money saved could be redirected into recruitment. If serving officers do not agree to this, they know where the door is, but in going through the door they should have their pensions frozen until they reach retirement age. Perhaps then beleaguered taxpayers would get something that resembles a ‘service’ that we all pay for. Jason Smyth, Herne Hill, London
