Jonny: I hope I’ll keep my place

- By Glen Williams

TWO-TRY hero Jonny May believes he is playing the best rugby of his career and is determined to hold on to the No 11 shirt after his efforts helped England to their cagey 12-6 win over Wales.

England flew out of the blocks and stunned Wales with two tries within the opening 20 minutes. May’s first came from Owen Farrell’s incredible vision, putting through a 40-metre grubber kick to allow the Leicester flyer to show his pace and latch on to the ball over the line.

May’s second and ultimately decisive score was handed to him on a plate courtesy of superb handling by Joe Launchbury, who showed dexterity and awareness to offload to May just yards from the line.

With in-form Anthony Watson on one wing and returning British and Irish Lion Jack Nowell entering the fray again, May hopes his efforts mean coach Eddie Jones keeps faith with him as England’s Six Nations title defence moves on.

‘I love being a part of this team and will do everything I can to stay in it,’ said May. ‘We are pretty happy but we are never content. I want to be the fastest. That’s what I work on and to score tries whenever I get the chance. That’s my job. I also have to work harder on my kick chase, defence and rest of my game.

‘I feel I am playing my best rugby at the moment. This environment means if you want to stay in, you have to keep improving all the time.’

May believes the victory — England’s 24th in the last 25 Tests — typifies the unity of this exciting crop of players.

‘We were relentless in punching holes in them and we did that all day,’ he added. ‘It was a great win. It shows the experience and the tightness of the group we have. We have a lot of players who have been through a lot together and fight for each other. Winning is a habit and we are finding ways to win.’
