Griff Rhys Jones’s dream holiday

-

CONTINUING our series featuring the holiday memories of famous people, this week TV presenter GRIFF RHYS JONES, 64, recalls his life of adventures…

First holiday I can remember:

Going to Gorran Haven, Cornwall, when I was about three. I remember Dad wearing a tweed jacket and tie to the beach, as men did in those days.

My first time abroad: d:

I went to Denmark as a schoolboy. It was like starting in the shallow end of foreign travel because Denmark was identical to Britain, as far as my school friends and I could tell, only they spoke a different language. One of the highlights was visiting the Carlsberg brewery – we were too young to drink beer, but I guzzled so much of the free fizzy pop that I was sick.

Top T school trip:

My teachers lined me up with a summer job as a school officer’s assistant on a t wo- week e ducational cruise to the eastern Med on the SS Uganda. It was carrying 600 female students from Canada, aged 16 to 18. I fell in love with so many girls during the course of the trip that I ended up corresponding with about 20 of them afterwards!

My honeymoon:

In Paris and Los Angeles. I spent a lovey-dovey week in Paris with my wife Jo and then flew off for a second week in LA with my Not The Nine O’Clock News mate Mel Smith.

Best holiday:

In Corsica about 20 years ago with Jo and our two children when they were young. We stayed in a converted mill and would jump off the nearby bridge and go swim- ming in the river below. It was the perfect family break.

And my worst:

A road trip through Brittany was dire. It was cold, it was wet, and most of the hotels were closed, so we gave up and headed for the nearest port and the ferry home.

My essential holiday item:

I never leave home without my trilby-style hat – when I’m travelling somewhere hot like the Caribbean, it’s an absolute lifesaver.
