NEW Sunderland boss Jack Ross is predicting a big season for Lynden Gooch. The American headed an injury-time winner after Josh Maja cancelled out Lyle Taylor’s opener for Charlton. Ross said: ‘Lynden has been outstandin­gly good for us in pre-season, he will be a top player for us this season.’ Charlton manager Lee Bowyer admitted: ‘We invited our own trouble towards the end. This is a difficult place to play but I expect us to be up and around it at the end of the season.’

GRANT McCANN made a winning start in charge of Doncaster. All the goals came after the break with John Marquis, Mallik Wilks and Tommy Rowe scoring for Rovers before Tom Hopper and Theo Robinson replied.

NEW-LOOK Peterborou­gh gave 11 players debuts — two off the bench — as they made a winning start. Matt Godden and Mark O’Hara got their goals, with Tom Lockyer scoring for Rovers.

MARK HOWARD made a string of fine sides in his second debut for Blackpool to deny League One newcomers Wycombe, who had Michael Harriman sent off. Blackpool manager Gary Bowyer admitted: ‘It was a hell of a battle.’

PORTSMOUTH manager Kenny Jackett set his sights on a promotion push. He said. ‘We are looking to go one better.’ Jamal Lowe got the only goal but Luton twice hit a post.

JACK PAYNE’S first-half goal secured a winning start for Bradford’s new boss Michael Collins. The midfielder swept home a low shot after George Miller’s fine work on the left.

BARNSLEY 4 OXFORD UTD 0

GOALS from Mamadou Thiam (2), Brad Potts and Victor Adeboyejo gave Daniel Stendel his first win in charge of Barnsley.

COVENTRY 1 SCUNTHORPE UTD 2

SCUNTHORPE came from behind to win at Coventry. Tony Andreu put the home side in front but Stephen Humphrys and Andy Dales won it. Coventry boss Mark Robins admitted: ‘We are not physically at our maximum.’

ACCRINGTON 0 GILLINGHAM 2

FIRST-half goals from Brandon Hanlan and Josh Parker spoilt Accrington’s first game in the third tier since 1960. Gillingham boss Steve Lovell said: ‘It’s a solid start. I can’t be happier.’

WALSALL 2 PLYMOUTH 1

PLYMOUTH defender Ryan Edwards scored in his first game since beating testicular cancer but still ended up on the losing side. He opened the scoring but Andy Cook quickly levelled for Walsall and Luke Leahy won it.

BURTON 1 ROCHDALE 2

ROCHDALE boss Keith Hill hailed his side’s ‘grit and determinat­ion’ in winning at Burton. Bradden Inman got both Rochdale’s goals, before Liam Boyce pulled one back.
