Seventies chic

- By Ben Hillman INTERIOR DESIGNER

I was too small to really take in Seventies style at the time but I had a baptism of fire at the age of ten when my family moved house. By now it was the late Eighties, but our new home’s kitchen was a faithful reproduction of a Wimpy bar, with bright orange Formica cabinets, white work surfaces, a suspended fluorescent panel ceiling and louvred pine cupboard doors.

As with every interiors era, there are design failures and there are shining examples of the style – like today’s house on the left.

To nail the Seventies look in your home, use warm oranges, yellows and browns, and select natural pine furniture pieces or flooring.

For me, the best backdrop to the look is clean white walls and the occasional exposed brick feature.

Fill empty spaces with oversized plants that hit the ceiling.
