ITN trio held in crisis-torn Venezuela

The Mail on Sunday - - Femail -

A THREE-STRONG British television news crew filming in Venezuela were arrested and held by the country’s intelligence service.

ITN reporter Dan Rivers, cameraman Barnaby Green and producer Laura Saravia were detained at a border crossing in the North-Western Zulia state on Friday – but have now been freed and have left the country. They had been covering the exodus of Venezuelans to neighbouring Colombia following the collapse of the country’s economy.

Mr Green tweeted afterwards: ‘Safely back in Colombia. Many thanks to everyone that has helped today.’

And Mr Rivers tweeted: ‘We have now been released from Venezuelan custody – exhausted but otherwise fine.’

Shortages of food and medicine and failing public services have resulted in 1.6 million Venezuelans fleeing since 2015, according to the UN.
