Fears for 250,000 energy customers

- By Simon Neville

CONCERN is mounting over an energy supplier with 250,000 customers after it appeared to have drastically scaled back operations.

Coventry-based Economy Energy was revealed last week to owe regulator Ofgem £15.5 million in green taxes – more than any other energy firm.

The Mail on Sunday found the supplier has taken down all its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, while Companies House revealed that its bosses have given themselves an extra six months to file accounts. The firm appears now only to offer one direct debit tariff.

Repeated attempts by The Mail on Sunday to contact the company were met with silence and customers have flooded the Trustpilot review site with complaints, with some saying they were still owed hundreds of pounds months after leaving. The firm was set up seven years ago by Lubna Khilji. According to the accounts, its turnover is £134 million and it had pre-tax profits of £2.1 million in the year to March 30, 2017. It owes creditors £26.8 million.

On Friday, Ofgem said that 15 suppliers missed a final deadline for green taxes – or Renewable Obligations – totalling £58.6 million.
