PM has a moral duty to help a fellow Christian

-

I think it’s disgraceful that Theresa May is blocking asylum in the UK for Asia Bibi – the Pakistani Roman Catholic whose conviction for blasphemy was quashed recently – on the grounds that it might antagonise British Muslims and place our embassy staff in Pakistan in danger.

Since when do we give in to possible threats? And when you see some of the violent criminals we have allowed to stay in this country, refusing this woman shelter is pathetic. Ian Verdon, Watford I am disgusted with Theresa May’s decision. Where are her Christian principles? And she is the daughter of a vicar! In Muslim-majority countries, Christians often suffer a great deal of persecution – or even death – due to their faith.

Sadly, the same persecution seems to be happening in other countries too, with attacks on Christians on the rise in neighbouring India. David Whittern, Bristol Britain used to be a proud nation that would always do the right thing, but now we have evolved into a spineless, gutless one that will shy away from the right path simply because we are scared of upsetting a vociferous, narrowminded minority.

Does our Prime Minister not realise that by taking this decision, she is seriously upsetting the majority of the population who are Christian and feel we must reach out to help a fellow Christian?

This is a serious failing of our Government and it is about time the population wakes up to this.

R. Robertson, Aberdeen Australia, Italy and other countries have offered to give Asia asylum, so there’s no need for the UK to join in just for the sake of virtue signalling. Bob Scott, Surrey This should be a decision for the Foreign Secretary and the Home Secretary and Mrs May should stop micro-managing and keep her nose out. I am sure Jeremy Hunt and Sajid Javid both quietly agree. And of course Asia Bibi should be given asylum. S. David, Surrey The cost of protecting her will probably cost a fortune. It is all about the money unfortunately.

Helen Thomas, Chingford The danger faced by Asia Bibi in a country we always considered civilised, and the failure of the UK to offer sanctuary, puts our Government to shame. For pity’s sake, this is a Christian country, and it’s a good job we didn’t have a government like this in 1939. We would have been afraid of offending Mr Hitler. David Skelton, Kellington, North Yorkshire This decision is a disgrace. We stepped in and saved Malala Yousafzai, the young girl who was shot by Taliban gunmen. Why can’t we step in and save Asia Bibi too? Name and address supplied
