Daly gaffe keeps Sarries on roll

- By Nik Simon

NINE from nine. Saracens remain on cruise control at the top of the table — thanks to some help from Elliot Daly’s ‘Campese Moment’.

The Wasps star threw a stray pass straight into the hands of Nick Isiekwe, who had a four-metre run-in to round off the victory.

Daly’s no-look mishap drew comparisons with David Campese’s gaffe in 1989, when the Australian gifted the Lions a series victory in Sydney.

‘Elliot apologised to the players,’ said Wasps coach Dai Young. ‘We didn’t lose the game through that mistake but it doesn’t help.’

Saracens have not lost since April. Their unbeaten run was extended to 20 games as the league remained a two-horse race with Exeter.

Brimming with confidence, Saracens allowed Owen Farrell to go on holiday this week so Alex Lozowski took over the kicking duties and notched up 19 points.

‘Alex is the kind of player everybody wants in their squad,’ said Saracens coach Mark McCall. ‘In Owen’s case, we thought it would be a good idea to get him away from rugby for a week, to keep him fresh — more mentally than physically.’

The game was tight for an hour until Jamie George burst down the left wing to score. The Saracens surge continued, with Daly’s error compounding the defeat.
