New plot to topple Bercow

A SECRET plot to sack Commons Speaker John Bercow for Brexit ‘bias’ has been launched by senior Tory MP Crispin Blunt.

The ex-Justice Minister privately appealed for 100 colleagues to back a no-confidence motion against Mr Bercow for abusing his power.

In a WhatsApp message to fellow Tory MPs last week, Mr Blunt railed against Remain voter Mr Bercow for allegedly flouting Commons procedure and overruling his own clerks’ advice.

Accusing the Speaker of hectoring and lecturing MPs, the message claimed: ‘I called him out for bias, I have not subsequently been called to speak in the last two EU debates.’

However, Mr Blunt appeared to accept that without widespread support from Labour MPs who normally back the Speaker, ousting Mr Bercow would not be possible.

He said: ‘We owe it to history to at least protest about his grotesque abuse of power and office in every respect.’

A spokesman for Mr Bercow said: ‘He has never allowed his personal views to influence his chairing of debates and statements.’
