From ‘Fatty’ to the gym bunnies

1950: Races were longer, driving was a test of brute strength. As a result, drivers were significan­tly heavier. Ferrari’s Alberto Ascari (right) was nicknamed ‘Ciccio’ (Fatty) and Jose Froilan Gonzalez ‘El Cabezon’ (Fat Head). They nearly all smoked and ate anything.

2019: Drivers combine fitness (running, swimming, cycling) and muscle (neck, chest, arms) with hand-eye coordinati­on training. Diet is a regulated mix of lean protein, carbohydra­tes and fresh vegetables and fruit.
