If your date’s a fake, you’re probably in Glasgow...
GLASGOW is top of the ‘catfishing’ league – with one in seven singletons turning up to a date to find the other person looks nothing like their online profile photo.
Catfish is the term given to someone who creates a profile on a social media or dating site, but uses a fake or doctored photo to attract interest.
In a poll of 2,000 Britons, 14 per cent of Glaswegians say they have fallen victim to the scam, followed by daters in Norwich on 13 per cent.
Those in Nottingham and Bristol are the least likely to be caught out, closely followed by people in Plymouth.
The study also found that 51 per cent of those polled said they compared their own life to those of celebrities, friends and colleagues on social media.
Clinical psychologist Dr Kelly Price said that such comparisons were most likely to have a negative effect on users’ mental health.
She added: ‘While they can be viewed as a source of motivation and inspiration, it is more often associated with the development of negative selfperceptions, feelings of inadequacy and inferiority.’
