KING LOUIS REIGNS SUPREME

- By Adam Hathaway AT KINGSHOLM STADIUM

TEENAGE starlet Louis Rees-Zammit reminded Wales of his finishing ability but Gloucester still have it all to do to make the last eight in the Champions Cup.

Rees-Zammit, who became the first 18-year-old to score a Premiership hat-trick last month, finished off a sweeping move after 49 minutes, pinning his ears back from the 22-metre line and making the corner for Gloucester’s second score.

Willi Heinz, Ben Morgan and hooker Todd Gleave also crossed to have the bonus point wrapped up with 15 minutes left but it might not be enough to get out of Pool 5.

Montpellier, who were already out of the Champions Cup, did not play their heavy artillery such as Nemani Nadolo, Louis Picamoles and Bismarck du Plessis and Gloucester put them away but next weekend could be different. The Cherry and Whites have to go to Toulouse and win to have any chance of getting through and Rees-Zammit might have been given an international call-up by then, with Wales naming their Six Nations squad on Wednesday.

In more good news for Wales, Owen Williams got through 68 minutes, after coming on for Danny Cipriani, as he returns from injury.

Montpellier took the lead against the run of play in the 20th minute with a long-range Frans Steyn penalty.

Inevitably, Rees-Zammit was heavily involved in Gloucester’s first score, handling the ball three times in a move that saw scrum-half Heinz scamper over.

Ollie Thorley’s eight-metre run two minutes into the second half forced the French to concede a penalty in front of the posts and Billy Twelvetrees did the honours.

Then came Rees-Zammit’s sharp finish and when Ben Morgan rumbled over as the game entered the last quarter the visitors were gone and Gleave was shoved over for the fourth when the French had Paul Willemse in the bin.
