Don’t let maths decide titles

-

HOWEVER long it takes, the season has to finish.

We are so far down the line, in all the divisions, to write it off now would be unfair to so many clubs — not just Liverpool.

The season must be concluded. It is imperative for the integrity of the game. Even if clubs have to play behind closed doors, that is still a fairer way than to create some crazy mathematical formula to decide it all.

There are so few games left, you could condense it into three games a week. Or, if it means next season starts later and we have to lose some domestic cups or even European competitions to make sure we can fit everything in, then so be it.

Our leagues that are the most important, the ones that are watched in huge numbers and create communities.

Every player I have spoken to wants the season to be finished.

I think it comes from their desire to have destiny in their own hands. For a player, if we are going to fail, at least give us a chance to control that as much as possible. If you get relegated, you feel like you deserved it, not something that was taken away.

And who is to say that one of those teams will not turn it around. My only dice with relegation was with Fulham. We won four out of our last five games, which we never looked like doing. Leicester were bottom at this stage the year before they won the title.

If the games do have to be played behind closed doors, it will be a travesty for everyone involved with Liverpool, after 30 years, not to have their special moment in front of their fans.

But in future seasons when we look back, the memories will be of this wonderful Liverpool team and the way they have played.

There cannot be a single fan who does not think Liverpool are the best team in the league.
