This Samaritan showed there is hope for Britain

-

One photograph you published last week offers us hope for a successful resolution of the Black Lives Matter demonstrations.

It was that of the BLM supporter carrying an injured Right-wing protester out of the surrounding mob to safety.

This was the story of the Good Samaritan in action, showing we are all in it together and, no matter our colour, we all belong to the brotherhood of man.

It was in stark contrast to the man pictured relieving himself by a memorial commemorating a brave policeman who died defending us against terrorism.

We must hope that the former photograph impinges upon the conscience of the nation and acts as a conciliatory gesture to defuse the vile animosity that scars the psyche of so many of our citizens. Denis Bruce,

Glasgow ‘What has become of the tolerant Britain we love?’ you asked on your front page last week, after fights between BLM and far-Right protesters. Black lives do matter – as much as everyone else’s. What is really important is human beings caring for each other as individuals, and seeing beyond the stereotypes. Efrosyni Hobbs,

Eltham, South-East London

It was inevitable that Right-wing thugs would emerge, as they did last week, to challenge the Leftwing thugs involved in BLM demonstrations. But now we have people in authority wheeling out old platitudes such as, ‘This type of racist thuggery has no place on our streets.’ This kind of thuggery will persist until a harder line is taken with people who bring violence to demonstrations. Chris Sharp, Leeds

What a brilliant article by Douglas Murray last week on where the recent anarchy will end.

Now, how do we get Sadiq Khan and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick, and all those in authority whose decisions and actions directly impact on the safety and quality of our daily lives, to understand that abandoning the rule of law and allowing anarchy to spread is abhorrent to the vast majority in this country. All lives matter.

Ray Greenfield, Basildon, Essex

The lack of knowledge by the protesters of the history of this country is frightening. The reason many students can go to Oxford University is in part because Cecil Rhodes, whose statue there is set to be removed, invested into it. I am certain every protester is wearing at least one item of clothing or using one device made in China – a country imprisoning thousands of their own Muslim people. Vera Brown, York

If monuments to those that have a link with slavery offend BLM protesters, then let them become museum pieces. Let’s replace them with sculptures of the brave people of this land who are a continuing reminder of our rich British heritage. Ian Hodgson,

Stockton-on-Tees, Co Durham

Home Secretary Priti Patel has said violent protesters will feel the full force of the law. Given her record on knife crime, I don’t think the thugs have much to worry about. A. McGrath,
