The flying Finn posted a time 0.012sec faster than second-quickest Lewis Hamilton in the other Mercedes, who dominated proceedings. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was a yawning half a second behind in third. Ferrari suffered a depressing afternoon with Charles Leclerc seventh quickest and Sebastian Vettel back in 11th.
McLaren’s Brit Lando Norris, 20, produced his best qualifying performance and will start today’s race from fourth on the grid.
