No charges for man who killed three attackers

- By Peter Henn

A BUILDER who stabbed three armed men to death after being cornered in an alley is thought to be the first person to face no charges over a self-defence triple killing.

Gurjeet Singh, 30, was confronted by a gang of four wielding hammers and knives as he walked home from a Sikh temple in East London in January.

Mr Singh, of Ilford, fought back with a knife in a deadly clash that lasted 13 seconds.

Yesterday the Metropolitan P o l i c e c o n f i r med that it would not be charging Mr Singh with either murder or manslaughter.

Three of Mr Singh’s assailants – Narinder Singh Lubhaya, 29, Baljinder Singh, 37, and Harinder Kumar, 30 – were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth man and the gang’s getaway driver survived.

It is understood the group had fallen out with Mr Singh over a business deal and had rowed over money. A source told The Times t hat CCTV f ootage showed Mr Singh fighting for his life, adding that he ‘went all Bruce Lee’ to defend himself.

Mr Singh was left with a two- inch cut to the left side of his head, smaller cuts to his forehead and back of the head, a wound to his hand, and what a court heard were ‘ crush i nj uri es’ , probably caused by a hammer.

Louis O’Donoghue, a 40-yearold scaffolder who arrived on the scene not long afterwards, said: ‘It was just chaos.

It was like something out of a movie. Horrific.’

Mr Singh was initially arrested for murder but charged with possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

He pleaded not guilty and was acquitted by a jury at London’s Snaresbrook Crown Court.

The surviving member of the gang, Sandeep Singh, 29, was sentenced to four years in prison and will be deported back to India after completing his sentence.

His brother Harpreet, 27, the getaway driver, was given a 12-month jail term.
