The rejection by the US State Department of the request for the extradition to the UK of Anne Sacoolas following her involvement in a fatal traffic incident should serve as a reminder of the inequitable way the treaty between the UK and USA functions.
Those with longer memories will recall the refusal of US courts to agree the extradition of known IRA terrorists on criminal charges on the grounds that they could not be certain that the accused would get a fair and just trial in the UK courts.
Surely the same argument should now apply reciprocally in the case of Julian Assange. Who can believe that the prejudicial attitude of the American political and military establishment will allow a fair and transparent trial?
