Woodrow keeps his nerve to rescue Murray’s men

-

ROTHERHAM assistant manager Richie Barker said the players are ‘absolutely devastated’ after they threw away a lead to Norwich.

Barker was leading the side with manager Paul Warne at home after a member of his family had tested positive for coronavirus.

Freddie Ladapo’s smart finish gave Rotherham an early lead and blew a chance to double it as Tim Krul denied him from the spot.

Rotherham skipper Michael Ihiekwe turned in Max Aarons’s cross, before Angus MacDonald received a straight red card for a wild lunge on Norwich’s Oliver Skipp. The visitors then nicked victory, as Jordan Hugill scored from the spot.

BARNSLEY caretaker head coach Adam Murray was pleased with what he felt was a deserved draw, as his side ended Bristol City’s 100 per cent start to the Championship season.

Cauley Woodrow equalised from the penalty spot in the 12th minute of added time for the Tykes.

‘ The last few moments were strange because the moment went on for so long,’ Murray said.

‘ You had their players messing with the penalty spot and trying to get into Cauley’s head.’

The home side started superbly — taking the lead in just the second minute. A Romal Palmer corner was headed in at the back post by defender Michal Helik.

Bristol City then equalised through Jack Hunt and took the lead with a deflected Tyreeq Bakinson effort after 51 minutes.

The pivotal moment came at the end of the game when Michael Sollbauer was fouled by Cal l um O’ Dowda. The defender received treatment for a long period before being carried off, with Woodrow converting the spot-kick with the last touch of the game.

Murray said: ‘ It’s horrible, I think it’s one of those challenges that we don’t really see in the game anymore.’

Bristol City manager Dean Holden agreed. He said: ‘It was a cruel ending in many ways. First and foremost our thoughts go out to the Barnsley centre back, he didn’t look in a good way, so fingers crossed he’s ok.’

GARETH AINSWORTH could not understand why his Wycombe side had a goal disallowed at a crucial time.

Not long after Jed Wallace’s penalty had cancelled out Scott Kashket’s bizarre opener, Joe Jacobson’s corner drifted all the way in, only for the strike to be ruled out. It appeared to be for a foul on Lions goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski, even though there was very little contact. Gary Rowett’s visitors made the most of their good fortune through Ryan Leonard’s winner.

Ainsworth, whose team remain without a point, said: ‘Please tell me what is wrong with that because the referee has given a foul. I cannot see any foul at all.’
