The Billion Dollar Art Hunt
BBC4, 9pm We all love a good heist story, and here’s a doozy, full of twists and turns as detectives pursue works of art together worth a fortune – and what makes it completely gripping is that it’s all true.
This is the latest chapter in an ongoing mystery going back to one fateful night in 1990 when works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Manet were among the 13 paintings taken from the walls of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston (right). Two men dressed as police officers had walked in, tied up the staff and left with a billion dollars’ worth of art.
Almost 30 years on, journalist John Wilson learns that the still unrecovered paintings are now to be found hidden in a house in Dublin. That tip-off proves to be just the start of a compelling investigation in which there’s no telling where the trail will lead.
