The Sound Of TV With Neil Brand

BBC4, 9pm Composers are the ‘unsung heroes’ of television, according to Neil Brand (right), and in the second episode of his three-part series he explores the music they have made not for the programmes themselves but for the stuff that goes in between them – from the adverts, idents and interludes to the humble testcard.

Delightfully, Brand’s musicological expertise is equalled by his unbridled enthusiasm for such deceptively simple creations as the Shake ’n’ Vac dance that viewers of a certain age will remember fondly, or the four-note wonder that has been the signature sound of Channel 4 since the station first went on air.

Look out for his meeting with ‘jingle queen’ Linda November, who has been the voice for more than 22,000 commercial theme tunes, and even entertains fans with live shows in Las Vegas.
