PICK OF THE DAY
Princess Alice: The Royals’ Greatest Secret Channel 5, 8.35pm Not to be mistaken with her grandmother, who shared the same name, this Princess Alice (right) was Prince Philip’s mother.
She was a remarkable woman. Born deaf at Windsor Castle in 1885 in the presence of her great-grandmother Queen Victoria, she learned to lip-read in several languages before marrying Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark; they and their children were forced to go into exile after the abdication of his brother in 1917.
She was later diagnosed with schizophrenia, underwent electroshock therapy, had treatment from Sigmund Freud, sheltered Jewish refugees from the Nazis, founded an order of nuns and spent her last days in Buckingham Palace.
That’s a lot to fit into just over an hour, but this eye-opening documentary does just that, with help from archive footage and expert testimony.
