Many happy returns
Growing up in the 1960s, I learned to recycle at an early age.
Milk was delivered to our doorstep in recyclable glass bottles by battery-powered milk floats. My corner shop gave me 2d when I returned my glass pop bottle; fish and chips were wrapped in newspaper; and fruit and vegetables were never pre-packaged but were sold in paper bags.
We had one dustbin which we struggled to fill. Now we have four different wheelie bins. Recycling still has a long way to go to match my childhood memories.
